Food for thought: how grocery retailers can better market to older adults
by Jeff Weiss
Adults 55+ represent a significant and growing segment of the consumer market – accounting for over 40% of all consumer spending – yet their needs are often overlooked by retailers.
Now, you might not think grocery stores would be a prime place to start in better servicing older adults (don’t all ages buy food in pretty similar ways?), but there’s a real opportunity for grocery retailers to enhance the shopping experience for older adults and build their loyalty.
Older shoppers have loads of grocery options and the companies that understand their unique preferences and meet their needs as they get older are primed to attract a larger share of their considerable spending power. They should realize too that older adults are a large and diverse audience with varying needs and abilities.
Below are a just a few ways grocery retailers can better service older adults:
Enhance Store Accessibility
Grocery stores should rethink their layouts to cater to older shoppers. Wide, clutter-free aisles and clear signage with large, legible fonts can make navigating the store easier. For older adults with mobility challenges, providing ample seating areas and accessible restrooms can help transform their shopping experience.
Provide Personalized Assistance
Older shoppers value personalized service. Training staff to assist with bagging groceries, reaching high shelves, or offering recommendations can make a significant difference. Additionally, designating specific hours for senior shopping—offering a quieter, less rushed environment—can encourage older adults to shop more frequently.
Implement User-Friendly Technology
While technology can be a double-edged sword for older adults, intuitive and well-implemented solutions could prove invaluable. Technologies like self-checkout systems with user-friendly interfaces and mobile apps that help shoppers locate items in-store could garner brand loyalty. Offering tutorials or staff assistance for these tools will make them more accessible to all, although don’t assume all older adults are technologically challenged.
Curate Senior-Friendly Products
Older adults often have unique dietary and health needs, from managing chronic conditions to pursuing wellness goals. Grocery retailers should consider highlighting products that cater to these needs, such as low-sodium or high-fiber and high-protein foods. Older adults may also be looking for new recipes and cooking ideas that reflect their desire to try new dishes and international cuisines.
Foster Community Engagement
Grocery stores have an opportunity to act as community hubs for older adults. Hosting events like cooking classes, health screenings, or tastings creates a welcoming environment and helps build a loyal customer base. Stores can also provide a safe and inviting venue for older adults looking to meet new people and make more social connections. Retailers can also partner with local organizations to offer discounts or services that benefit older adults.
By prioritizing accessibility, personalized service, and meaningful engagement, grocery retailers can significantly enhance the shopping experience for older adults. Businesses that invest in understanding and supporting this influential demographic will not only drive sales but also build lasting relationships with a loyal and appreciative audience.
